First of all, if this is your first play through of Demon’s Souls, don’t be surprised if the first big boss you encounter, the Vanguard Demon, one-hit kills you. But once you awaken in the Nexus and meet your fellow comrades trapped in there with you, you’ll want to head to the leftmost archstone, Boletarian Palace (aka 1-1). Once you defeat the big slimy demon there, Phalanx, you’ll get access to the rest of the archstones.
It was nothing less than a phenomenon, and it’s hard to argue there has been any series as impactful, influential or downright exquisite this past decade. You can check the state of a world’s tendency by going to the World Tendency screen view the Archstone of each world. The whiter it is, the closer you are to achieving Pure White in that world. Each world can lean towards one of the two existing tendencies – White and Black. Depending on your level of black or white in each state, different events will be unlocked. While this might seem like a pretty minor change, one has to admit that most of the NPCs in the Soulsborne games felt completely lifeless due to a complete lack of any lip-syncing.
Thankfully, players can breathe a sigh of relief because omnidirectional rolling is in the remake. Personally, I’ve always been a framerate over fidelity guy, so I played the whole thing in performance mode and never looked back. That said, cinematic mode is definitely a stunner if you don’t mind sacrificing half the frames. It is all around just a magnificent showcase of the power of the PlayStation 5 and an enticing taste and what’s to come if things can look this good on a launch game.
Boss Battle: Phalanx
FromSoftware as a company has moved on from Demon’s Souls in a major way, and it didn’t have anything to do with the remake from Bluepoint. Unfortunately, despite a Demon’s Souls 2 being theoretically possible, it’s very unlikely it ever gets made due to Sony owning the Demon’s Souls IP. The original Demon’s Souls was developed by FromSoftware, but it was published by Sony exclusively for the PlayStation 3. Sony owns the Demon’s Souls IP and published the 2020 remake developed by Bluepoint Games. This creates a unique situation where Sony owns the IP, but FromSoftware owns the creative DNA (combat systems, world-building style, etc).

Take, for instance, the Vanguard, the first boss in the game, the one who will most likely give you your first in-game death. In the original, it has overgrown teeth that overlap each other and stretch over its cheeks, like a cage for its tiny tongue. Its eyes are three large shining lights, nearly dominating its face. g28 of course does not include the multiplayer aspects, which should add at least another 100 or so hours of gameplay in most cases, and likely more if you are a Souls fan who likes to co op and pvp a lot.
World Tendency’s level of light or darkness would cause certain events to happen as the tendency changed. And when played online, the actions of all players in aggregate affect the tendency, which can make the game unpredictable. But there is one small change that veteran Demon’s Souls players will welcome. The Dragon Bone Smasher can be found just after entering the Demon’s Souls Dragon God boss arena, but it requires pure white World Tendency to find. This weapon also gives you slightly more protection against fire damage, making it almost like another piece of armor. This will help you make it through certain levels with a lot of enemies that use fire, such as the Flamelurker boss encountered in the game.
It’s a brilliant use of the series’ PvP mechanics that has been incredibly difficult to properly experience in the years since Demon’s Souls‘ official servers went offline. Well, the remake lets you experience the proper version of the Old Monk boss fight, which also benefits from better visuals, enhanced controls, and a crystal clear soundtrack. The first happened when I unlocked the door to one of the game’s first bosses. Excited by my progress, I ran down a stairwell to a nearby shortcut, took a wrong turn, and fell to my death. I could have easily walked into the boss room from the respawn point, but I was determined to retrieve my lost souls.

Most players likely won’t notice as good audio should go unnoticed due to it feeling seamless, but this is an improvement for the better in the remake which makes the game feel a bit more modern in 2020 and beyond. The original’s poor four direction rolling system made dodging enemy attacks hard. It was one of the things that increased the game’s difficulty in a frustrating way.
The ability to hit in a straight line from mid-range can come in handy in a number of sinisterly designed areas throughout Demon’s Souls. You don’t have to kill all the small enemies to defeat the boss, but once you do the boss becomes a punching bag and can’t protect himself anymore. Fundamentally, Demon’s Souls for PS5 is what it has always been.
Everything’s a little uglier, a little grimier, a little less visually striking. The Flamelurker, an imposing golem of fire, looks like a Diablo monster. The lighting is smoothed over, yes, and so is a lot of the strangeness. The world of Boletaria, where Demon’s Souls takes place, is an unnatural place, with monsters, people, and settings that just look a bit wrong.

Now those music can be heard much better and more beautiful with the improvement of the game, and we are witnessing a unique title in this field. Used and in fact the spirit in Demon’s Souls is everything and you have to manage it very well and be careful not to lose a lot of them suddenly. Demon’s Souls Remake combat system is at the highest possible level of balance and appeal, and is so well-tuned, tactical, and based on your accuracy and skill that you truly enjoy playing. Also, performing various activities in the game is best set on the Dual Sense controller, and you are completely comfortable with the game control. Demon’s Souls is the prototypical Souls game, so it carries a bunch of the hallmarks of the formula that has come to define From Software’s titles in the years since. You play a lone warrior venturing into a dark fantasy land dominated by monsters and demons, where your goal is to slay enemies to gain the souls they carry.
Depending on your choices and mistakes, you could find yourself exploring a dungeon that has increased in difficulty, yet also yields more significant rewards. It is highly suggested to play in Soul Form if you wish to grind your world tendency to white then commit suicide while in Human form to shift it to black.
