The best that could be said about these collectibles is they never feel like a chore to track down and get. Finding everything and everyone that the game hid across its levels has its rewards. Such rewards inlcude leading players to even more great Easter Eggs, and unlocking bonus features like the Photo Mode. 3D action platformers have many ways to keep their players engaged long after defeating the final boss.
Unlike all of the other Astro Bot DLC stages, Winter Wonder is accessed via the Galaxy Select screen. To do so, players will need to find and crash into the floating planet with the Christmas hat. Four of the bots at the Crash Site will only appear once players have rescued them in Astro’s Playroom. @nicc83 I would say around the hour mark if you just do the main levels and that’s it, but if you want to see and do everything, likely 20 hours or more. Obviously it depends on how much exploring you do and how much you’re bothered about collecting everything — it’s a very meaty 3D platformer in my opinion and a really nice length. Astro Bot is a showcase of a developer working at the top of its game, but most importantly a developer that keeps fun and playfulness at the forefront of everything it does. Finally though I want to highlight the fantastic score, because like its levels, it bounces around genres, delivering consistently catchy head bobbers, on top of slightly remixed versions of iconic Sony soundtracks. I know this OST is going to be in my regular rotation once it finally drops on Spotify, because it’s simply too good to leave locked within this game. Carefully jump onto the invisible platforms above the other sunken stones in the desert until you reach the other side (remember to use your booster dog).
This is a grand re-opening for Astro Bot, and it surely marks the start of what is destined to be a beloved series shooting for the moon. Spending TG88 in the game’s shop unlocks dioramas, ship paints, and costumes for Astro, even some based on unexpected series such as Bloodborne and Gravity Rush. If I have one complaint about the game it is that the record keeping system that keeps track of the bots collected, does not break down who the special bots are and the game(s) they are from. Team Asobi clearly designed it for players of all skill levels, and that includes children and newbies, but at its core Astro Bot feels purpose-built for video game fans. It’s a skill-driven celebration of everything that makes the format so memorable and joyful, and at the same time, it’s an excellent introduction to the language of games.
It could be said that the combination of futurism with cuteness perfectly embodies the identity of the Japanese roots of the PlayStation brand that Kutaragi started. Characters like Toro, Parappa and Ape Escape’s monkeys share a somewhat similar blend of digital, cool and cute. Team Asobi cements itself as an essential PlayStation studio with an imaginative platformer for the ages. Bots are white humanoid robots, with two arms and legs connected to their bodies through sockets.
